Regional or Local Number: SARA-PNR-2017-0395

Notice is hereby given that pursuant to the provisions of section 73 of the Species at Risk Act permit no. SARA-PNR-2017-0395 is issued.

Activity necessary or beneficial to the species

This is an amendment to permit SARA-PNR-2016-0341 to allow for the collection and possession of hair samples from Ord’s Kangaroo Rats for DNA analysis and to add 5 new field assistants. The purpose of the amendment is to investigate the genetic relatedness among local subpopulations, among Alberta and Saskatchewan populations, and populations in the United States. This will assist with decisions regarding translocation and genetic isolation, consistent with the recovery strategy. For the complete description of activities, see permit SARA-PNR-2016-0341.

Start Date: 2017-08-22   End Date: 2019-06-01

Issuing Authority: Environment Canada

Authority Used:

  • Species at Risk Act

Location of Activity (province, territory or ocean):

  • Alberta

Affected Species:

a) All reasonable alternatives to the activity that would reduce the impact on the species have been considered and the best solution has been adopted. Collecting and using hair for genetic material is less harmful and invasive than the alternative of ear or toe clipping, or collecting a blood sample. b) All feasible measures will be taken to minimize the impact of the activity on the species or its critical habitat or the residences of its individuals. Only 10 to 20 hair samples will be taken with tweezers. The collection of hair samples will only add several seconds to capture and handling time, and has animal care approval. c) The activity will not jeopardize the survival or recovery of the species. No animals are intended to be killed. The activity is consistent with Recovery Strategy objectives.
