Scientific research for the conservation of the species
The activity involves fisheries monitoring using backpack electrofishing in accordance with the Ontario Stream Assessment Protocol (OSAP) at three Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) monitoring locations. This is non-fatal fish community sampling, whereby Redside Dace may be encountered. All individuals are to be released live. This work is part of CVC's long-term Integrated Watershed Monitoring Program (IWMP), which was initiated in 1999, with the goal of providing information on the status, trends, and emerging issues related to the integrity of valued ecosystem components in the Credit River watershed.

a) Alternatives: Alternative methods were briefly considered but as this is a long running program, alteration to this protocol would compromise the integrity of the program and disrupt the time series dataset. CVC's IWMP was established in 1999 to provide information on status, trends, and emerging issues related to the integrity of valued ecosystem components in the Credit River watershed. These sites include urban and urbanizing areas within the Redside Dace distribution. Other data are also collected at many of these sites including water temperature, water quality and benthic macroinvertebrates. The bulk of the proposed six sites have been monitored by multiple disciplines for over 10 years and in some cases more than 15 years. Redside Dace captures at these and other sites in the Credit River watershed are very infrequent and are only represented by 1 or 2 individuals. During IWMP sampling of the proposed six sites, 3 individuals have been captured in 2 different years out of a total of 53 sampling events between 2000 and 2016. Integrating other long-term non-fish data with fisheries information is valuable for conservation and environmental planning across the region. b) Measures to minimize impact: Electrofishing will be conducted with low voltage and a skilled crew actively assessing the catch for species at risk (SAR). Measures for adequate aeration and rapid processing will be undertaken. In the event of Redside Dace capture, only pertinent biological information will be collected and a photo voucher will be taken, in water. Any individuals will be live-released. c) Effects on survival and recovery: The project will benefit Redside Dace by meeting two of the Protection and Recovery Objectives from the Redside Dace Recovery Plan. These are to determine distribution and abundance of extant populations, and to establish a long-term monitoring program to assess the status of Redside Dace and its habitats. There has been extensive sampling of these streams in the past, and there are very few occurrence records despite over 50 discrete sampling events. These negative samples are also important for understanding Redside Dace distribution on the landscape. Electrofishing, using low voltage and skilled crew members, will result in little to no fish mortality, and there is a good likelihood that Redside Dace will not be encountered. As CVC proposes to use standardized, non-fatal sampling techniques and utilize well trained staff, the value of these and other integrated IWMP aquatic data can be considered against the very low potential for harm to an individual Redside Dace and the negligible impact on the population.
