Scientific research for the conservation of the species
The activity authorized by this licence is the sampling — by seine or electric fishing — and catching of eastern sand darter, Quebec populations, in the Mascouche River, and bycatch of channel darter. The purpose of this activity is to improve knowledge of the eastern sand darter's distribution in the northwestern portion of Quebec. Channel darter may be caught because some of the planned sampling areas are located within the range of this species and in similar habitats. The project will temporarily alter the behaviour of the species during sampling. The project is not expected to cause mortality or alter habitat.
Start Date: 2017-08-21 End Date: 2017-09-08

- Species at Risk Act
Location of Activity (province, territory or ocean):
a) Alternatives: The best methods have been chosen to conduct these surveys. The catch methods are non-lethal and minimize the risk of injury. The methods do not affect habitat. b) All possible measures were taken to minimize any negative effects of this activity on the eastern sand darter and the channel darter. The chosen fishing techniques reduce mortality probabilities, and caught fish will be released immediately at the catch site and in the best possible conditions for fish survival. c) The activity will not jeopardize the survival or recovery of the species. This activity should not result in mortality of eastern sand darter or channel darter. This type of fishing has no impact on these species' habitats.
