Notice is hereby given that pursuant to the provisions of section 73 of the Species at Risk Act permit no. DFO-17-PCAA-00023 is issued.

Description:
This project will investigate the abundance and distribution of freshwater mussel species in the inland Lake Ontario watershed and will contribute to the body of knowledge regarding freshwater mussel distribution and abundance. Through surveys, dreissenid mussel presence or absence will also be documented as the impact of these invasive species is great upon native mussel populations. A minimum of three sites will be surveyed per waterbody. Substrate will be excavated using a trowel and inspected with a sieve until all mussels are accounted for within a quadrat. Several water quality parameters will be measured. With the collected data, species diversity, total population size and density are calculated for each site.

a) Alternatives to field surveys include reviewing freshwater mussel distribution data; however, there is little or no data on freshwater mussel populations in the inland waters of Lake Ontario, Greater Toronto Area region. Searching for these datasets has been undertaken in 2013 by the Toronto Zoo. b) All efforts will be made to minimize impacts on the survey habitat and mussel species. Staff with freshwater mussel expertise will be present at all times during mussel sampling. The number of staff in the water at a given time will be minimized. Mussel species found will be temporarily held in perforated buckets or mesh bags in the shade, allowing river water to flow through. The only time any mussel shall be out of the water is when the individual is being handled for the purposes of identification, taking measurements or taking photographs. Mussels will be returned promptly to the location where they were found. When released, mussel individuals shall be buried with their posterior end sticking out of the sediment at the location from which they were collected (Mackie et al. 2008). All field equipment will be disinfected when changing waterbodies, prior to starting surveys to prevent the spread of disease and/or invasive species. c) Effects on survival and recovery: The chosen methodology follows the mitigation measures identified in the Protocol for the Detection and Relocation of Freshwater Mussel Species at Risk in Ontario-Great Lakes Area, and are unlikely to have any impacts on freshwater mussels. The activities will not jeopardize survival or recovery of the species. These surveys will help to delineate the distribution of Eastern Pondmussel and Rainbow mussel in the Greater Toronto Area and the Kawartha Lakes region, which will in turn contribute to the protection of these species’ habitats.
