Scientific research for the conservation of the species
Activities consist of the following: Rearing hatchery-sourced White Sturgeon eggs, larvae and juveniles at various experimental temperatures at the University of British Columbia Department of Zoology laboratory facilities; Conducting a laboratory study on the effects of rearing temperature on future performance; Conducting a laboratory study on the effects of olfactory sensitivity and response to alarm substances or predator odour during early ontogeny; and Euthanizing all hatchery-sourced White Sturgeon on completion of studies.
Start Date: 2017-04-15 End Date: 2018-04-30
Issuing Authority: Department of Fisheries and Oceans
- Species at Risk Act
Location of Activity (province, territory or ocean):
- British Columbia
a) Alternatives: The applicant considered not conducting works at all, using a surrogate species, and assessing whether eggs/larvae are required for other conservation needs. As using hatchery-sourced individuals in excess of conservation needs is not anticipated to impact wild individuals or habitat, it is considered the best solution. b) Measures to minimize impact: As only hatchery-sourced individuals in excess of conservation needs will be used, proposed works are not anticipated to impact the species or its habitat in the wild. Animal care procedures and guidelines developed and refined over several years of research will be followed in order to minimize impacts to hatchery-sourced individuals. c) Effects on survival and recovery: Activities are not anticipated to jeopardize survival or recovery of White Sturgeon (Nechako River population). Activities are anticipated to further inform existing knowledge gaps.
