Notice is hereby given that pursuant to the provisions of section 73 of the Species at Risk Act permit no. DFO-17-PPAC-00007 is issued.

Scientific research for the conservation of the species

Authorized representatives of Fisheries and Oceans Canada will collect and possess Northern Abalone (Haliotis kamtschatkana) individuals and parts thereof for the purposes of scientific research. The ultimate goal of the activities is to assist in the recovery of this species.

a) Alternatives: Alternatives were considered; however, the activity poses no threat to the species or the habitat. b) Measures to minimize impact: Minimal impacts to the species will be mitigated by minimizing the number of samples taken, and returning individuals to their residences as quickly as possible. c) Effects on survival and recovery: The activity will not jeopardize the survival and recovery of the species. The Northern Abalone individuals collected as part of scientific research are being sampled using a non-lethal protocol, and will be returned to the location they were collected.
