Scientific research for the conservation of the species
Parks Canada is obtaining possession of 50 – 80 feathers of the Greater Sage-grouse from the Calgary Zoo. The feathers were found on the ground, shed from living captive birds or else taken from captive birds that had died from reasons unrelated to this project. The feathers will be used in predator studies within Grasslands National Park in order to help recover the endangered sage-grouse.

Issuing Authority: Parks Canada Agency
- Species at Risk Act
- Canada National Parks Act
Location of Activity (province, territory or ocean):
Alternatives: Conducting this study without the feathers was an alternative but the best method to get the most accurate results related to predation of Greater Sage-grouse nests is to use the real feathers. Because the use of the real feathers is inexpensive and will produce better results with no impact to sage-grouse, it was chosen as the most feasible option. Mitigations: Feathers were not removed from any live birds. Jeopardy to Survival or Recovery of the Species: Because the feathers were not removed from any live birds, this project will not affect any Greater Sage-grouse.
