Scientific research for the conservation of the species
The purpose of the activity project is to monitor the abundance and distribution of the nearshore fish community in the Upper St. Lawrence River and Lake St. Francis, with a focus on fish species in the minnow family (Cyprinidae). Fish communities will be surveyed using beach seines (30' length, 1/4" mesh) following standard protocols used by DFO and Parks Canada (Thousand Islands National Park). Species will be captured, identified, and immediately released live on site.

a) Alternatives: The proposed activities are the best option for documenting the presence of Pugnose Shiner in nearshore habitats of the St. Lawrence River, as they use a standard gear type (beach seines) that are ideally suited for surveying nearshore, wadeable environments and that have minimal detrimental impacts to captured fishes or their habitat. Other possible survey gear types would include electrofishing backpacks, boat electrofishers, minnow traps, bottom trawls, hoop/trap nets, and gill nets, but these have limitations in terms of costs of implementation, catch efficiency, or potential harm of sampled individuals, and for these reasons were not considered viable alternatives. b) Measures to minimize impact: Measures to minimize impacts will include placing captured fishes in perforated holding bins that remain in the river and allow fresh, ambient water to flow through; the additional use of portable aquarium air pumps in all holding bins; the use of minnow viewers to identify individual fish specimens (allowing fishes to remain in water during identification); conducting post-capture identification procedures in a shaded location and/or out of direct sunlight; and, the immediate release of fishes back into their habitat following identification. c) Effects on survival and recovery: The proposed activities will not jeopardize the survival or recovery of Pugnose Shiner in the Upper St. Lawrence River, and will in fact lead to improved and much-needed knowledge on the distribution and habitat associations of this species in sections of the river where it has previously not been studied frequently or in great detail. Beach seining methods are widely used by government and scientific researchers because they are ideally suited for sampling nearshore environments in terms of efficiency and result in minimal fish mortality. The overall number of Pugnose Shiner expected to be captured during these surveys is likely very small compared to the population of the Upper St. Lawrence River.
