Notice of permit

Regional or Local Number: 17-PCAA-00001

Notice is hereby given that pursuant to the provisions of section 73 of the Species at Risk Act permit no. 17-PCAA-00001 is issued.

Purpose:
Scientific research for the conservation of the species

Description:
The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority (SCRCA) is sampling fish and mussels in several locations for presence/absence data. Currently, fish and mussel data is lacking in these areas. Baseline data will be collected to assist in future project proposals and inquiries. Benthic sampling will be undertaken for watershed characterization to allow the SCRCA to assess water quality throughout the watershed. Data obtained will assist the SCRCA in the identification of potential rehabilitation sites and impact monitoring.

Start Date: 2017-03-10   End Date: 2017-11-30

Issuing Authority: Department of Fisheries and Oceans

Authority Used:

  • Species at Risk Act

Location of Activity (province, territory or ocean):

  • Ontario

Affected Species:

Pre-Conditions:
a) Alternatives: In order to reduce the potential for harm, the SCRCA has considered recording only fish species lists and not measuring/weighing fish. The SCRCA does not use the length/weight data and if all regulating agencies agree to this alteration to the protocol, the change will be adopted. b) Measures to minimize impact: Documented sightings of SAR species have been researched and sensitive locations are known. Fish will be placed in bins/buckets of water for quick identification and then released back into the watercourse. Mussels will be placed back where they were found once identified. During benthic sampling, if a mussel bed or sensitive area is found, sampling will be moved downstream. c) Effects on survival and recovery: The survival of the species listed in the application should not be jeopardized. All rare mussels and fish will be returned to their habitat unharmed, if encountered. No habitat will be impacted as a result of the proposed activities.
