Notice of permit
Regional or Local Number: MPO-LEP-QC-17-001
Notice is hereby given that pursuant to the provisions of section 73 of the Species at Risk Act permit no. MPO-LEP-QC-17-001 is issued.
Activity affecting the species is incidental to the carrying out of the activity
During sampling of fish using a beach seine as part of a research project to assess the health of river fish and study the effects of chemicals on them, it could occur incidental capture of copper redhorse, sand darter or channel darter. The project does not target copper redhorse, sand darter or channel darter but certain sampling areas outlined in the study design are in or adjacent to their distribution area and incidental captures are possible. Chances of catching this protected species are very low since in similar activities going to the past five years, no species at risk has been caught.

Location of Activity (province, territory or ocean):
a) Alternatives: The best method was chosen for this study. The method used is non-lethal and minimizes the risk of injuries on individuals in the event of a bycatch. The method has no effect on habitat. After five years of sampling in the same areas, no species at risk have ever been caught using this method. b) Measures to minimize impact: All possible measures were taken to minimize any negative effects of this activity on copper redhorse, sand darter or channel darter any part of their critical habitat. The selected fishing technique reduces the likelihood of fish mortality and any fish bycatch will be released immediately at the catch site in the best possible conditions to ensure the survival of the fish. c) Effects on survival and recovery: The activity will not jeopardize the survival or recovery of the species. No copper redhorse, sand darter or channel darter mortality should result from this activity. This type of fishing has no impact on the habitat of the species.
